Families of researchers are not guaranteed to obtain a short-term residence permit. We advise that family members visit only during their visa/visa exemption period.

Important: ICO cannot get involved with the visa or residence permit applications of researchers’ families. We can only provide the information we have compiled.

Visa

Nationals of countries who are eligible to obtain touristic visas to Türkiye do not need a special type of visa other than a touristic visa for regular entry. If, by nationality, a consular visa is required, dependents must apply for a visa at the nearest Turkish consulate of their residence and follow the procedures of that specific mission. An online pre-application is available for this option from any country. Regardless of age (newborns included), each person must abide by visa or non-visa entry rules depending on nationality. Visa Information for Foreigners page on the official Foreign Affairs website provides visa rules for A-Z list of countries. Please note:an ordinary visa refers to a touristic visa in that list.

e-Visa

An e-Visa is a touristic visa that allows citizens of certain countries to visit Türkiye without an in-person visa application at a consulate. Family members can also use the e-Visa module to figure out if they are eligible for touristic entry and to learn about visa requirements.

Children Born in Türkiye

Children born in Türkiye must acquire a residence permit within 6 months of birth. This period is adjusted downwards depending on the length of the benefactor’s residence permit. However, even if the benefactor’s residence permit is valid for longer, the maximum amount of time allowed until a residence permit application is made on behalf of the newborn is still 6 months.

Any travel of the newborn outside Türkiye, at any time, without a residence permit, is a violation of Foreigners’ Protection Laws and is subject to fines. If you have a baby and are leaving Türkiye soon, there might be penalties upon exiting the border unless you, the family, acquire the newborn’s residence permit card before their departure.

Parents must have an official birth certificate issued in Türkiye soon after the birth. This document will be required to obtain a passport for the newborn, which is a must for a residence permit application. It must be noted that this document does not replace a residence permit and cannot be used for travels outside Türkiye or to enter Türkiye.

To Do

  1. Obtain an International Birth Certificate
  2. Obtain a passport for the newborn
  3. Follow our instructions on the “First Time Family Residence Permit Application” Page
  4. Make a new residence permit application for your newborn
    1. If the system does not accept the applicant’s (newborn) passport number, you may type the mother’s passport number
